Til age six, the Ramapo Mts in upstate New Jersey were my little stomping grounds. The wild Lady Slippers, the peeling birch, and my limitless imagination were my companions.
Jump forward to southern California. Mother, sister, myself and our pet canary, Micky, move to Santa Barbara. My sister would bring home exotic vinyl music selections from the local library. We would wallow in classical, folk, traditional, musical theater and opera music while my mother chased her dreams and rendered artistic images of future building developments.
The blues would come later. We lived in an apartment above the old drug store in Montecito. “I grew up above the old drug store. Climb up on the roof tops, so I could see far. A wild eyed canyon climber looking out on my world. A rambling. Scrambling. Crazy little girl” L’il Lizzie
On road trips all three of us would cover miles with three part harmonies of the old standards and favorites from my mothers era. I joined school choruses. I got the lead in “Calamity Jane” in 9th grade. My childhood heroine was the same.
“I’d pretend to be Calamity Jane. Gallop my little bicycle holding on the reigns. Up and down the alleys. Dodging all the cars. Begging merrichino cherries at the back door of the bars” L’il Lizzie
I studied to be a light Opera singer. I was accepted, with scholarship to Disney's Cal Arts in their first year in the Dance program…..but I decided to be an Actress. Jump to Hollywood. After three years of waiting tables and “being an Actress”, I decided to leave LA. The mexican prep cook empathized with my exodus and supplied me with food for my first journey North. Jump to UC Santa Cruz: Theater Degree . Jump to San Francisco: Magic & Eureka Theaters. Working with Sam Sheppard on The Buried Child. Nominations and awards from Bay Area Critics Circle. Jump into marriage, my first son, and move to Alaska. Buy a red three quarter ton GMC. Pack it with a cast iron wood stove, food, clothes and ourselves. We head North. Head North and stay. Theater, motherhood, struggle, and bliss in the Great Land. Two glorious son's grow up and take flight. A curious thing. This life of formal trainings and experiences that stacked a resume, only to continually make choices that led me away from the cultural centers to a place of immeasurable personal challenge and inspiration. A late blooming flower that discovers her true passion. Her true expression of life.
Jump to now. Songs start popping into my head. I sing them. I’m a bird in perpetual spring now. Lordy me ! This joint's a hopp'in !
Please listen to my CD.
Come see me perform…The magic happens when we are all together !
Takes all of us to make this Circle Dance Turn. Join me!
